Retreating in complete darkness is a practice common to many of the ancient and contemporary spiritual traditions across the world. From the monks and lamas in Tibet, to the Kogi Mamos in Colombia; the ancient Egyptians and the mystics of 15th Century France, Dark Retreats have provided revelation and illumination to countless practitioners who have sought the inner light.

The Dark Retreat is an unparralleled experience in intense seclusion, in which the practitioner is deprived of all light and sensory distractions, and thus plunges into a deep witnessing awareness of the mind, and eventually experiences the perception of the inner light of pure Consciousness.

Built entirely from natural river stones, cement and crystals, the Dark Retreat at The Hermitage is submerged into the hillside and is entered through a special underground tunnel. Resting predominantly under the earth at the base of a sacred copal tree, retreaters will experience the embrace of mother earth as they ‘return to the womb’ of darkness and silence.

The Dark Retreat at The Hermitage has been specifically designed with an increased air flow capacity that exceeds the average resting oxygen exchange rate, enhancing the amount of fresh oxygen to the brain and allowing for increased mental focus and clarity in meditation.

Retreaters have the option of two wholesome vegetarian meals per day or may wish to bring their own food or snacks. Food is delivered through a double-door food cupboard, drinking water is provided inside on tap and the bathroom features a natural eco shower and eco toilet.

The Hermitage Dark Retreat has also been designed for Couples Retreats, providing a beautiful opportunity for partners to enter together into deep silence and union. Couples can sleep separately or together inside and make use of the large space for individual time and practice.

Many spiritual traditions have used darkness techniques in the pursuit of enlightenment. In Europe, the dark room often appeared in underground form as a network of tunnels, in Egypt as the Pyramids, in Rome as the catacombs, in India and Tibet as caves, and now on Koh Phangan in the form of two earthbag domes.

Complete darkness profoundly changes the sensory sensibilities of the body and brain. Being deprived of all visual reference, major cortical centers in the brain are shut down, body and mind gravitate towards a new equilibrium, and the doors toward psychic and spiritual experiences are opened. The four glands located in the area of the head (pineal, hypothalamus, thalamus, and pituitary) are stimulated and, over time, psychedelic chemicals (”spirit molecules”) accumulate in the brain. The experiences of each person will vary and depend on a large number of factors. At the same time, most people including beginners in yoga, will receive great benefits, which may include: profound relaxation, readjustment of the body’s biological clock, harmonization of sleep patterns, rejuvenation and revitalization (cellular transformation), enhanced perception of subtle energies and astral lights, OOBEs, prolonged lucid dreams, psychic perceptions of different forms, deep meditation, altered and transcendental states of consciousness.

Since the beginning of time, spiritual seekers, mystics and shamans, have been using different kinds of practices to enter a deep meditative state to achieve self-realization. One of the most ancient practices found all over the world is a retreat in darkness.

When we are in darkness, time magically slows down. Once we get acquainted with the motherly womb that darkness offers, we relax and find peace inside ourselves. In darkness, we enter the state of non-duality and non-judgment as we are no more conditioned by appearances. After getting familiar with darkness, we surpass our usual perception of it as something scary and recognise it as a cosmic womb, a space from where everything took form. If we perceive God as Light, then we realise that darkness is the Mother of God.
In this retreat, with the guidance and individual counsel of the teacher, we have the opportunity to reach a profound state of awareness, awakening and bliss. We will alternate moments of silence with guided meditations, breath techniques, sharing and self inquiry with the teacher, individually and in the group. The first level of this Darkness retreat will last four days. There will also be an advance level of two days right after the first level.
